Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of Iran's Parliament, will not attend the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in New Delhi due to certain unforeseen circumstances. The Iranian Embassy in India announced this on Saturday, October 24, 2026. A parliamentary delegation from Iran will still participate in the meeting in his place.
The Event Details
The two-day conference takes place on October 26 and 27 in New Delhi. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said the discussions focus on fostering parliaments for people-centric development. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the event, though no separate invitations were extended to opposition leaders of the two houses.
Official Stance
The Iranian Embassy stated that Iran remains committed to active and effective participation in BRICS summits and meetings. The attending delegation will continue its dialogue with other member countries to deepen bilateral and multilateral cooperation, especially in parliamentary relations. The embassy also thanked the Indian government for its hospitality and arrangements.
Context
BRICS brings together major emerging economies to strengthen political and economic ties, with Iran joining as a full member in recent years. Parliamentary forums allow lawmakers from member nations to coordinate on shared goals and build closer diplomatic connections. High-level delegations routinely attend these diplomatic summits even when top leaders face scheduling changes or travel hurdles.
