Janata Dal (United) expelled Bihar MLA Anant Kumar Singh and his wife Neelam Devi on October 24, 2026, imposing a six‑year ban for anti‑party activities. The decision came from state president Umesh Singh Kushwaha, who said Singh ignored party directives, made derogatory remarks about senior leaders and campaigned for Jan Suraaj Party candidate Anuj Singh in the recent Legislative Council election. Singh also boycotted the JD(U) nominee Neeraj Kumar in the Patna graduates constituency, openly supporting the opposition. The party has asked Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar to declare Singh’s legislative seat null and void. On October 16, Singh complained that the party erred in giving the ticket to Neeraj Kumar, claimed he had stood by Nitish Kumar since the start of his career, and alleged that Neeraj Kumar first opposed his candidacy in the 2025 assembly poll. The JD(U) posted a statement on X confirming the termination of Singh’s primary membership and the immediate expulsion of his wife for similar anti‑party conduct. Both expulsions take effect at once and will remain for six years. ## Context JD(U) is a key partner of the NDA coalition in Bihar, and internal discipline is used to maintain party unity ahead of future elections. Supporting a rival candidate is viewed as a serious breach that can trigger disqualification from the legislature.
