The Karnataka state government will evaluate the use of elephants in Dasara festivities through a scientific review, School Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa announced on Saturday.

Incident

On Wednesday, October 21, the Dasara procession in Shivamogga was disrupted when Somanna, the elephant pulling the howdah, turned back and ran erratically along the route. The sudden movement caused chaos and left onlookers shaken.

Government Response

Bangarappa, who also oversees Shivamogga district, said he will not give a personal view and will let the Forest Department and the state government decide. He noted that Chief Conservator of Forests K.T. Hanumanthappa has submitted a preliminary report on the incident, which will guide the decision. The minister added that officers and mahouts had unanimously chosen Somanna for the howdah after all three elephants—Somanna, Bahaddur and Sagar—underwent equal training and rehearsals. He acknowledged that animal behavior can be unpredictable, comparing it to a pet dog biting its owner. The government will collect reports from all sources, including senior officials, and will take action against anyone found responsible. Shivamogga MLA S.N. Channabasappa and senior district officials were present during the briefing.

Context

Elephants have long been featured in Indian festivals, but recent incidents have sparked safety concerns, prompting authorities to seek scientific assessments before allowing their participation again.
