The opposition INDIA bloc plans to hold a public impeachment proceeding against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on October 30, 2026. Congress MP K.C. Venugopal announced this move on X, as the opposition steps up its demand for the removal of Mr. Kumar from his post.

March And Mobilisation

Following the public impeachment, the opposition will hold a Dilli Chalo March against vote theft. The march will end at Ramleela Maidan on November 1st, with at least one million citizens expected to take part. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has reached out to all INDIA Bloc parties to request their leaders and members to be present in Delhi in full force.

Context

The Constitution of India gives the Chief Election Commissioner strong protection against removal under Article 324(5). A CEC can only be removed through the same process as a Supreme Court judge, which requires proved misbehaviour or incapacity and a strict parliamentary procedure.

What Happened

The opposition INDIA bloc has announced a public impeachment proceeding against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, followed by a large protest march in Delhi.

Why It Matters

What Happens Next

It remains to be seen how the Election Commission and ruling authorities respond to the opposition's planned events in Delhi, and whether the proposed events draw the targeted million participants to Ramleela Maidan on November 1st.
