Nicky Hayen has been dismissed by Burnley after just 14 league outings, the club citing a dismal start to the campaign. His final appearance was the Saturday 4‑1 loss to Lincoln City, which left the Clarets on the bottom of the Championship table in 22nd place. The Belgian was hired on 10 July to replace Scott Parker, who departed following the team's confirmed relegation from the Premier League at the end of April. Burnley released a brief two‑sentence announcement within two hours of the ProAmpac Stadium defeat. In the post‑match press conference Hayen said he would not waste his energy over matters beyond his control. Hayen previously lifted the Belgian league title with Club Brugge in 2024 and was recruited by owner Alan Pace to drive a promotion push, after Burnley secured elevation in the 2023 and 2025 Championship seasons. After an encouraging draw with West Ham on opening day, results have slid; the side have not won a home league game since beating Leeds United in the Premier League more than a year ago. Earlier this month the team recorded a 4‑0 victory over Watford after the international break, then drew with Charlton and lost to Wolves, scoring first in both. The recent defeat means Burnley have won only one of their last 24 league matches and have let in 25 goals in the opening 12 Championship fixtures – the poorest defensive record in the division.
Context
Burnley are trying to return to the Premier League after last season’s drop, and a change of manager is a common step clubs take when early results threaten further decline.
