Why Professionals Switch

Many accomplished professionals in India who hold degrees from top institutes and universities abroad are willingly leaving high-paying careers in business and technology to become teachers. A sociological study conducted between 2023 and 2025 by Vani S. Kulkarni, affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania and Yale University, explored a small, non-governmental teacher-preparation program in North India known as I Am A Teacher, or IAAT. Many participants in this program were mid-career individuals experiencing corporate burnout, seeking deeper meaning, and finding that their previous work environments felt too focused on money and targets.

Realities and Rewards

Although these career-switchers faced lower salaries, intense preparation, and unpredictable classrooms, none of them expressed regret. Instead, they described the transition as a powerful personal transformation that brought relief, greater patience, and a renewed sense of self-identity. Many of these teachers were women returning to the workforce after long gaps, finding both independence and vocation in education. The study highlights that India does not lack capable people willing to teach, but rather lacks respected pathways and entry programs that welcome mid-career professionals into the profession with dignity.
