Police in Guwahati detained Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and several senior party leaders on Friday, September 25, 2026, during a protest march. The demonstration was organized by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee to demand the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The Protest March

Party members started their march from the state headquarters, known as Rajiv Bhawan. Their plan was to walk towards the Chief Electoral Officer's office and burn an effigy of the CEC. Police set up barricades near Rajiv Bhawan to stop the crowd. When protesting leaders tried to push past these barriers, police officers took them into custody.

Detentions and Reactions

Congress spokesperson Bedabrata Bora claimed the leaders were forcefully arrested and called the police action a threat to democracy. Alongside Mr. Gogoi, the police detained AICC secretary Manoj Chauhan, Seva Dal president Deep Bayan, and APCC general secretary Udit Bhanu Das, along with several other party workers.
