Tamil Nadu will soon launch a new education plan called the One Degree, Six Skills programme for college students. Under this plan, undergraduate students in government arts and science colleges will learn one job-ready skill in every semester. The scheme will start in January 2027 during the even semester. It was developed with the Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education.

Programme Details

The scheme applies to students at 181 government arts and science colleges across the state. Students studying a standard three-year degree will pick up six extra skills by the time they graduate. These skill lessons run alongside regular classes instead of replacing them. Officials have picked 20 skill courses for arts and basic sciences. Each course takes between 30 and 45 hours to complete. Colleges will choose from these courses and pick an expert trainer for each subject.

Assessment and Industry Links

There will be no traditional written exam for these skill courses. Instead, grading relies entirely on practical work. The evaluation system gives 40 percent weight to skill exercises, 30 percent to individual competency, and 30 percent to a final demonstrable output. Along with this, colleges must sign agreements with at least three major industries. These industry partners will help update the course content and arrange internships and job placements for the students.
