What Happened

The National Council of Educational Research and Training stated on Friday that no topics have been dropped from the draft Class 9 mathematics syllabus. The council released part two of the class 9 mathematics books, titled Ganita Manjari 2, earlier this week.

Syllabus Changes

NCERT explained that certain topics were moved into other chapters instead of remaining as standalone units. For instance, concepts related to Lines and Angles now appear in chapters nine and twelve of the Grade 9 Part 2 book, following a dedicated chapter in Grade 6. Euclidean geometry concepts are covered across chapters five, six, nine, twelve, and thirteen. The council dropped the traditional abstract axiom-theorem-proof chapter after consulting teachers and educators, opting instead for student-led exploration.

Modern Additions

NCERT added a chapter on algorithms to the Grade 9 mathematics syllabus to align with the National Education Policy and National Curriculum Framework. The council noted that modern artificial intelligence relies on mathematics, making computational thinking, data structures, and running time efficiency vital for students. The final syllabus and textbooks will be released in October by NCERT and the Central Board of Secondary Education based on feedback from teachers, students, and authors.
