Stiff fingers and swollen hands upon waking up can indicate the early stages of arthritis, according to medical experts. Dr Ashutosh Jha, an orthopaedic consultant at Manipal Hospital in Ghaziabad, explains that physical inactivity overnight causes joint fluid to thicken and inflammation to accumulate around the joint lining. This physiological process leaves hands feeling tight and difficult to move during the early hours of the day. Different types of joint conditions display distinct patterns. Osteoarthritis typically triggers stiffness that fades away quickly once a person starts moving around. Rheumatoid arthritis generally causes longer-lasting tightness that impacts both hands symmetrically. Early signs often appear in the small finger joints near the knuckles before affecting larger areas of the body. Common indicators include tenderness, a warm sensation in the joints, and rings feeling uncomfortably tight in the morning hours. While occasional stiffness resulting from poor sleeping positions or a tiring day is normal, regular morning tightness requires medical evaluation. Doctors advise seeking professional help if the stiffness persists for thirty minutes or more on most days. Blood tests and medical imaging are commonly used to diagnose the specific type of joint disease.
