Amber-level wind alerts have been activated for Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland as Storm Boelo draws near, with gusts forecast up to 70 mph in Scotland. The Met Office said the alerts start at 21:00 BST on Saturday and will stay in force for 24 hours in Scotland, while Northern Ireland’s amber period runs until 10:00 BST on Sunday. Coastal spots exposed to the sea could see wind speeds as high as 80 mph, raising the risk of power outages, flying debris, building damage and hazardous waves. The storm follows closely on the heels of Storm Austen, which knocked out electricity for many homes in south‑west England. National Grid reports that more than 124,000 properties have had power restored, yet several hundred remain dark on Saturday evening. Travel is already being hit: the River of Light festival in Merseyside was cancelled for a second day, Knowsley Safari Park will close on Sunday, and markets in Salford and Cheshire were called off. Dublin Airport suspended several flights and ferry operators StenaLine, Irish Ferries and P&O Ferries halted a number of crossings. Met Office chief forecaster Jason Kelly urged people to secure loose items, limit outdoor activity and stay away from trees and buildings during the high‑wind period.
Context
Storm Boelo marks the second named system to affect the UK in as many days, illustrating how quickly successive weather events can strain power networks and disrupt public gatherings.
