No. 8 Texas Tech suffered a 37-18 defeat against Cincinnati after quarterback Will Hammond struggled with two costly turnovers and red-zone issues during the game.

First Half Struggles

Late in the first half, Texas Tech allowed a touchdown to fall behind by 11 points. Quarterback Will Hammond threw a floating jump ball that was intercepted by Cincinnati safety MJ Cannon, leading to another touchdown that made it a three-score game at halftime. During the game-deciding second quarter, Hammond completed only 2 of 6 passes for 12 yards with an interception, while Cincinnati went on a 21-0 run.

Missing Sorsby

The loss exposed a major offensive void left by portal quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who was forced to step away from the team amidst a gambling probe. Sorsby previously played two seasons at Cincinnati and threw for 5,600 yards before entering the transfer portal. He faced a lawsuit from Cincinnati over an unpaid buyout and admitted to placing thousands of dollars in bets, which led to permanent NCAA ineligibility. A court ruling restored his eligibility, but outside pressure eventually forced him to step away.

Defensive and Roster Issues

Apart from Hammond's struggles, Texas Tech allowed 257 rushing yards, including a career-high 173 yards to Cincinnati running back Cole Tabb. The team's offensive line has also played poorly despite returning three starters, and opponents are now stacking the box against the offense. Backup quarterback options include Tommy Castellanos, who has faced eligibility cases, alongside underclassmen Lloyd Jones and Stephen Cannon.

Context

Despite the tough loss, Texas Tech holds a prior win over No. 14 Houston and faces upcoming games against No. 25 Arizona and Oklahoma State. The team aims to regroup and work its way back into the Big 12 and College Football Playoff race.
