UPDATE - follow-up to Fresh clashes rock France as protesters march on: Police arrested nearly 1,000 people across France on Saturday as officers faced heavy violence from black-clad ultra-left extremists during nationwide marches over the cost of living. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated that security forces dealt with an extremely elevated level of violence and deployed 70,000 personnel nationwide.
Clashes and Injuries
Riot squads fired tear gas in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Lille, Toulouse, Montpellier, and Nantes. Mr. Nunez reported that two people were seriously injured, including a man in Toulouse who reportedly lost fingers, along with another person in Clermont-Ferrand. Demonstrations drew between 410,000 and 800,000 people nationwide according to authorities and the CGT union, while the Paris march drew between 110,000 and 250,000 attendees.
Government Response
The government ordered police to block protesters from reaching city centres, and imposed partial curfews in certain urban zones. President Emmanuel Macron banned non-union demonstrations as illegitimate. Mr. Nunez defended the outcome as more positive than the previous week due to faster police action and better protection of businesses, though critics condemned the crackdown as an assault on protest rights.
Context
France has a long history of labour and public demonstrations driven by economic pressures and government policies. These recent protests reflect deep public anger over living costs and fuel prices ahead of upcoming national elections.
