At least 22 people died when a bus slammed into a truck on Kenya’s main Nairobi‑Mombasa highway on Sunday, October 25, 2026. The crash happened near Makueni County. Several other passengers were hurt and are being treated in nearby hospitals. Police said the travellers were coming back from a funeral when the collision occurred. Makueni County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif warned that the death toll could rise as more victims are examined. The exact cause of the crash has not been confirmed. Earlier studies have linked speeding and poor road conditions to many Kenyan road deaths. The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) classifies the stretch where the crash happened as an “accident black spot” and says it has already issued safety improvement recommendations. This accident follows a similar incident three weeks earlier that killed 17 people on the same highway. The NTSA report earlier this year listed the Makueni stretch among ten high‑risk zones on the Nairobi‑Mombasa corridor and recommended speed cameras, clearer signage and resurfacing pothole‑prone sections. Authorities have urged drivers to observe speed limits and for the government to speed up road repairs.
Context
Kenya’s Nairobi‑Mombasa highway is a busy trade route, and black‑spot designations are used to highlight sections with a history of serious accidents.
