Researchers using astronomical simulations, historical weather data, and Van Gogh's letters have found that Vincent van Gogh's painting 'The Starry Night' closely matches the dawn sky around July 22, 1889, near Saint-Rémy.
Cellular Longevity
In a separate study, scientists used the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans to discover why moderate cold temperatures help prolong lifespan. Cold exposure makes muscle cells produce a metabolite called BH2. This metabolite travels to the intestines and neurons, where a salvage enzyme turns it into BH4, which then helps extend lifespan by driving tyrosine synthesis. Treating patient-derived motor neurons with BH2 also prevented toxic protein clumps linked to Huntington's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Urban Cooling
A third study found that grouping buildings with similar functions, like schools and houses, into large clusters can cool cities. Analyzing 101 cities, scientists discovered that every 100-meter increase in building cluster scale reduces urban heat island intensity by 4.5% due to better airflow and coordinated heat release.
Context
These findings highlight how modern tools and biological models help researchers uncover new insights across art history, molecular biology, and urban design. Such interdisciplinary studies often combine historical data with advanced technology to solve long-standing questions.
