Deendayal Upadhyaya's philosophy of Integral Humanism continues to shape the governance model and welfare policies of the Bharatiya Janata Party government. Fifty-five years before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 2020 call for an atmanirbhar Bharat, Jana Sangh ideologue Upadhyaya presented his philosophy through four lectures in Bombay in April 1965, stating that the positive content of swadeshi should rebuild the economy. The current administration has reflected these principles through welfare schemes like the Pradhan Meantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, Jan-Dhan Yojana, Ujjwala Yojana, Awas Yojana, and Swachh Bharat Mission, alongside initiatives such as Direct Benefit Transfer and digital public infrastructure. The BJP government also commemorates Upadhyaya by naming welfare schemes after him, celebrating his birthday on 25 September, and unveiling a 72-foot statue in New Delhi. However, critics point out that Upadhyaya's ideas on decentralisation have faced pushback due to the centralisation of political and fiscal power, while scholars like Vinay Sitapati have noted resemblances between Upadhyaya's work and a 1936 book by Catholic thinker Jacques Maritain.
