Grief And Glory

Indian table tennis player Diya Chitale won a mixed doubles bronze medal at the Asian Games just days after learning about the death of her long-time mentor, Peter Engel. Competing at Sky Hall, the 23-year-old partnered with 25-year-old Manush Shah to secure the podium finish. Diya started training with the former India coach in Germany back in 2015 when she was 12 years old. Engel, who was in his 70s and unwell in recent times, continued to train her with the same passion until his health worsened last week.

Overcoming Setbacks

Before heading to the continental event, Diya had faced a difficult period marked by early exits at the United States Smash, Europe Smash, and WTT Star Contender Almaty. She had also missed the Paris Olympics cut due to a foot injury. To prepare for the Asian Games amidst a busy calendar, Manush travelled to Mumbai and trained with Diya at Khar Gymkhana for four days. When they were not together, Diya spent months honing her serve and return solo. In the quarterfinals, the world No. 8 pair defeated Hong Kong's Wong Chung Ting and Doo Hoi Kem with a scoreline of 11-6, 13-15, 11-9, 11-5, following strategic reviews with national head coach Massimo Constantini. This victory secured India's second mixed doubles Asian Games podium after Achanta Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra achieved the feat in 2018.

Looking Ahead

Manush and Diya eventually lost their semifinal match in straight games to Olympic gold medallists Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha, with fatigue playing a role after Manush played four matches on Friday. Despite the loss, the pair views the medal as a stepping stone. Diya dedicated the bronze to Engel, stating that he would have wanted her not to dwell on his death. Both players have their sights set on higher goals, with the ultimate target remaining the Olympics.
