The Nifty 50 index currently trades around the 23,100 level, marking a drop of over 12 percent or more than 3,200 points from its record high of 26,373 reached in January. The benchmark index has fallen roughly 5 percent in the past month due to soaring US bond yields, a stronger US dollar, rising crude oil prices, a weaker rupee, and ongoing US-Iran tensions. Continued selling by foreign institutional investors has also weighed on market sentiment. Vinod Nair of Geojit Investments Limited noted that investors have monitored UN General Assembly proceedings regarding the US-Iran conflict and US-China discussions amidst a geopolitically charged backdrop. Mayank Jain of Share.Market by PhonePe explained that elevated crude prices create short-term pressure on inflation, the domestic currency, and market sentiment, which heavily impacts an import-dependent economy like India. Vinit Bolinjkar pointed out that the decline reflects external pressures such as the US 10-year Treasury yield moving past 5 percent, crude prices rising above $100 a barrel, and foreign investor selling, though he maintains that reaching 25,000 means reclaiming ground rather than breaking new territory. Vishnu Kant Upadhyay from Master Capital Services noted that the index is down more than 11 percent year-to-date and identified the 100-day exponential moving average near 24,000 as a key technical hurdle. Market analysts agree that a sustained recovery toward 25,000 depends on external headwinds easing, lower bond yields, stable crude prices, a return of foreign buying, and strong upcoming quarterly earnings from heavyweight sectors like banking, IT, oil and gas, and FMCG.
