Buyout Offer
Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to roughly 60,000 employees as part of an effort to cut costs and rework its workforce for artificial intelligence. Eligible workers include those at the vice president level and below on select teams across the United States, Canada, India, and the United Kingdom. Chief People Officer Amy Coleman sent a note to staff explaining that the voluntary exit offer gives workers a choice to transition out of the company with financial support and career planning resources.
Team Eligibility
Staff members across multiple divisions can take part in the offer, including teams working on AI experiences, Copilot, CoreAI, Windows and Devices, Xbox, finance, and human resources. Other groups like Microsoft's cloud and AI teams and corporate affairs are partially participating. Meanwhile, workers on marketing, commercial business, quantum, and security teams are excluded from the offer, alongside data center staff. Employees who accept will receive standard severance benefits.
Context
Large technology companies frequently restructure their teams and adjust staffing levels as they shift their strategic focus toward emerging areas like artificial intelligence. Voluntary exit programs offer an alternative to traditional layoffs by allowing eligible employees to choose departure packages. Microsoft previously offered a retirement-focused buyout earlier in the year to a smaller group of long-serving workers.
