Nepal is set to receive 21.6 million dollars from the United Nations Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage following a severe flash flood and debris flow on August 26.
Board Decision
The board of the fund approved this financial support provisionally during an extraordinary meeting held on October 22. Nepal submitted a formal request letter on August 31, and the board held discussions throughout September and October. The country must still submit a formal application, which the board will review during its tenth meeting in December.
Disaster Impact
The disaster resulted in the deaths of roughly 1,300 people, which included hundreds of pilgrims from India. Total damages reached up to 2.69 billion dollars, while the government of Nepal stated that recovery and reconstruction will require an initial 4.71 billion dollars.
Climate Factors
A report by the World Weather Attribution group noted that climate change played a major role in the disaster. The direct trigger was the sudden collapse of a large rock and glacier ice wall, while warming temperatures and permafrost thawing weakened the source wall.
Reactions and Context
Harjeet Singh, who serves as the Global Convenor of the Fill the Fund campaign, stated that while the response was a historic first step, a permanent rapid-response system is needed so support arrives in days rather than months. The Fund was established in 2023 to offer quick financial aid to developing nations facing losses from climate-driven weather events, and this decision comes ahead of the COP31 summit in Antalya, Türkiye.
Context
The Loss and Damage Fund acts as an international financial mechanism designed to help vulnerable nations cope with the unavoidable impacts of global warming. Extreme weather events driven by climate change have increasingly caused severe infrastructure destruction and loss of life across South Asia.
