Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is reshaping his political image from an urban-focused tech leader to a rural-friendly champion by prioritizing a massive Rs 35,000-crore irrigation roadmap. In the late 1990s, Naidu earned the title of 'CEO-CM' by bringing global tech giants like Microsoft and Google to Hyderabad, but that urban-centric focus contributed to severe electoral defeats in 2004 and 2014 due to rural distress and droughts. Today, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government is redirecting corporate efficiency toward water management, aiming to dismantle the opposition's anti-farmer narrative. At the center of this strategy is the Polavaram National Irrigation Project, alongside marquee developments like the Veligonda Project and the Rs 4,910 crore Chintalapudi Lift Irrigation Scheme. In the drought-prone Rayalaseema region, the government has accelerated the Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi projects. Together, these initiatives have secured 52 TMC of additional water capacity to support nearly 14 lakh acres of cultivation. The state has also introduced an 'Irrigation & Water Calendar' and deployed AI firms like Vassar Labs to audit rainfall and reservoir levels in real time. TDP leaders and political analysts note that this makeover serves as both a short-term buffer against rural anti-incumbency and a long-term strategy for the 2029 elections. Alliance partners, including the Jana Sena Party and state BJP President P.V.N. Madhav, have backed the agricultural push, helping the coalition project a united, pro-farmer front.
