James Trafford starts in goal for England against Spain at Wembley

James Trafford is set to start in goal for England as they face reigning World and European champions Spain at Wembley Stadium. This marks England's first match since their third-place finish at the World Cup, entering the game straight in at the deep end.

Team Selection and Manager Reaction

England manager Thomas Tuchel defended his decision to select Trafford ahead of long-standing goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Tuchel explained that Trafford will get two consecutive matches because he deserves them, after which Pickford will take the other two games. Tuchel confirmed that Pickford is still considered the team's number one, and the change is simply meant to create competition for the spot. He added that Pickford reacted very positively to the news.

Expert Views and Pre-Match Atmosphere

Former England defender Matt Upson noted that Spain are tough opponents with a strong rhythm, while England defender Jarell Quansah highlighted Spain's unbelievable unbeaten streak. Former Republic of Ireland captain Roy Keane praised the fixture as a great test for young players Elliot Anderson and Myles Lewis-Skelly. Meanwhile, the pre-match show at Wembley leaned heavily into Oasis song 'Wonderwall', which served as the anthem for England's World Cup run, featuring phone lights, flames, and fireworks.
