Many people only think of visiting an eye doctor when their vision turns blurry, when they start squinting, or when they need a new pair of glasses. However, clear vision does not always mean your eyes are healthy. Some retinal problems can develop without showing any noticeable symptoms in their early stages.
Silent Conditions
Dr Mahesh G, a senior consultant and head of vitreo retina at Giridhar Eye Institute in Kochi, and general secretary of the Vitreo Retina Society of India, explained why routine retinal checks are necessary. He highlighted conditions like diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, known as AMD, which progress silently without early warning signs. High blood sugar from diabetes slowly weakens the tiny blood vessels that supply the retina, and many diabetic patients stay unaware that their eye health is getting worse. Along with diabetes, ageing can also affect the retina and increase the chances of age-related macular degeneration, which can harm central vision.
Prevention and Action
Doctors advise against waiting for eyesight changes before booking an eye exam. Regular medical examinations lower the risk of eye damage. Warning signs to watch out for include blurry vision, dark spots, and sudden flashes of light. Routine screenings and early detection serve as the best defense to manage these conditions and protect your sight even when your eyes feel completely fine.
