WorldDictionary.com names 'maxxing' as the top word of the year for 2026

Americans have made "maxxing" the 2026 Word of the Year for Dictionary.com.

Details

Short for maximising, the term works as a noun, verb, adjective, or adverb. People use it on its own or add it to the end of other words to show they are doing something to the absolute limit. Steve Johnson, director of lexicography for the Dictionary Media Group, says the term shows a culture that is focused on getting the most out of everything. Digital media used the word nearly 19 times more in August 2026 compared to the 2025 monthly average. Dictionary.com also considered affordability, data centre, odyssey, and "unc" for the title. This choice is a big shift from past years when the site chose "demure" and "67".

Usage

Younger generations and people under 30 post widely on social media about their maxxing habits. Fitness influencers talk about proteinmaxxing and fibermaxxing, while others focus on sleepmaxxing. An influencer named Clavicular has gained thousands of followers by posting about his looksmaxxing efforts to improve his physical appearance. Johnson notes that while some people embrace this push for more, others exaggerate it for fun or use it to describe taking a step back.

Language tracking sites like Dictionary.com pick a yearly word based on search data, news trends, and social media habits to capture the cultural mood of the time. The root idea of the term has existed for decades, appearing in popular culture as early as the 1990s television show theme song for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
