Independent senator Jacqui Lambie states that One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has still not personally apologized to her over a party cartoon mocking her medical condition. Pauline Hanson previously issued a public apology for the cartoon, which was shared in the 'Please Explain' series, and the video was removed from online platforms. However, Jacqui Lambie revealed in an interview on ABC's 7.30 that Pauline Hanson has not emailed, messaged, or sent a card to say sorry directly. Meanwhile, Mark Nicholson, a One Nation candidate in the Victorian state election and cofounder of Stepmates Studio which creates the cartoons, refuses to offer an apology. Mark Nicholson stated that his job involves targeting public figures and asserted that he would not apologize because he did not do anything requiring one. He also claimed that the cartoon brought significant attention to the medical issue rather than mocking it. In response, Jacqui Lambie called for Mark Nicholson to withdraw from the election entirely.
Context
Political cartoons and satirical videos have long been used in Australian election campaigns to target public figures, but they occasionally cross lines into personal attacks. Medical conditions and private health struggles are generally considered out of bounds in mainstream political discourse, sparking widespread debate when they are featured in campaign material. Candidates and political parties frequently clash over the boundaries of free speech versus personal respect during high-stakes election periods.
