JetBlue Airways posted a net loss of $257 million for the three months ended Sept. 30, up from a loss of $143 million a year earlier, as the carrier dealt with a 61% jump in its fuel bill to $868 million.
Market Response
Despite the wider loss, JetBlue stock soared roughly 11% in after-hours trading Monday after shares had fallen to a new low earlier in the day. CEO Joanna Geraghty stated that strong travel demand and higher yields drove revenue ahead of expectations, allowing the airline to recapture more of the fuel cost increases.
Fares And Liquidity
JetBlue's average fares rose more than 19% to $245.11 in the third quarter from $205.67 a year earlier. The carrier ended the quarter with $2.2 billion in liquidity, an unencumbered asset base of $7 billion, and total debt of $8.4 billion.
Context
Airlines frequently face pressure on profit margins when global jet fuel prices rise sharply. Carriers often try to balance these rising expenses by raising ticket prices and increasing the share of premium seats to win back profitability.
