Traffic rules begin in Aluva today for bridge repair work and will stay in place until November 6, 2026. The old Marthanda Varma Bridge stays closed during this period. Heavy vehicles from Thrissur to Ernakulam must take a different route through Irinjalakuda, Kodungallur, North Paravur and Cheranalloor. Heavy vehicles from Thrissur to Aluva will divert at Angamaly to use the Kalady-Perumbavoor road. Heavy vehicles coming from Vyttila to Aluva must go towards Cheranalloor and take the North Paravur-Kodungallur road. Heavy vehicles from Kalamassery and Angamaly cannot travel towards Aluva at all while the work goes on. Buses and other heavy vehicles coming from Varapuzha and Kadungallur must turn at Kadungallur Junction and reach Aluva using UC College Road and North Paravur. Vehicles going the other way must take a left turn at Thottakattukara Junction to reach Kadungallur. No traffic is allowed on the National Highway service road that leads to Thottakattukara. Smaller vehicles can still use the new Marthanda Varma Bridge in both directions. Police may also start a one-way traffic system inside Aluva town if needed.

Context

People heading to the airport should leave early because the rules will likely slow down travel. Officials also suggest using public transport to keep traffic jams down while the old bridge stays shut.
