Odisha and Andhra Pradesh have closed schools, banned sea fishing, and kept rescue teams ready to prevent any loss of life.

Storm Path And Warnings

The India Meteorological Department reports that the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm. It is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam by the forenoon of October 28. Maximum sustained winds will reach 115 to 125 kmph, with gusts up to 140 kmph. Southern Odisha districts started receiving rain as the storm moved west-northwestwards at a speed of 25 kmph.

State Preparation

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered emergency preparations, including the evacuation of flood-prone areas. Authorities have shifted 4,711 pregnant women to safe healthcare facilities and ensured that 30,043 fishing boats returned to harbors. Odisha has readied 1,700 shelters. The Department of Health has set up 6,431 emergency beds, 630 medical teams, and 716 vehicles, reviewed by Health Secretary G. Veerapandian and Commissioner K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu. Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana has directed officials to clear drains and stop waterlogging. Meanwhile, panic buying hit Visakhapatnam as shoppers emptied local markets for essential goods.

Context

Tropical cyclones frequently form in the Bay of Bengal during the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, often threatening India's eastern seaboard with heavy rain and destructive winds. State governments routinely deploy disaster response forces and medical teams ahead of predicted landfalls to minimize casualties in low-lying coastal zones.
