Anup Bagchi, a veteran of the ICICI Group, has taken over as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of HDFC Bank, becoming the first outsider to lead the lender in its more than three‑decade history. Bagchi, who previously served as MD and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, succeeded Sashidhar Jagdishan, who vacated the post on October 26 after completing his term. Jagdishan stepped down amid a bank‑initiated probe that found irregularities in booking high‑quantum deposits by paying depositors an extra amount over the card rate, and he was fined for the practice. The probe also followed the surprise resignation of non‑executive chairman Atanu Chakraborty in March 2026, which raised questions about the bank’s governance and ethics. Bagchi said on an earnings call that work related to the 2023 merger with parent HDFC Ltd remains unfinished and that he will meet all stakeholders to understand the business better. He praised the existing leadership team, while investors watch closely as the bank wrestles with slowing core‑income growth and margin pressure. Deputy Managing Director Kayezad Bharucha announced his retirement by December 2026. HDFC Bank’s shares were up 0.07 % at ₹688.7 on the BSE at 09:56 hrs, against a 0.11 % dip in the benchmark.

Context

The leadership change comes as the bank seeks to restore confidence after governance lapses and to drive post‑merger integration, a crucial step for maintaining its position as India’s largest private‑sector lender.
