Genetic Study
Farmers in Kashmir have grown traditional types of rice for many generations. A new study by researchers at the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology in Srinagar shows these local varieties hold a unique genetic history. The findings appear in the journal The Plant Genome.
Traits And Origins
These traditional rice types carry genes that help them handle cold weather and adapt to local conditions. Modern rice varieties have partly lost these helpful traits. This makes the older local types potentially valuable as climate change brings more stress to crops. Genetic checks also show these varieties are closely related to rice from the Korean Peninsula and Northeast China.
Context
Plant researchers often study older local crop varieties to find helpful traits that modern farming strains left behind over time. Understanding how crops connect across different regions helps experts protect food supplies against shifting weather patterns.
