A fire broke out at Emirates Chocolates and Dry Fruits on Market Road in Kannur at about 12.45 am on Tuesday, causing around ₹2 lakh in damage. Passersby saw smoke rising from the first‑floor storage area and called the Fire and Rescue Services. Three fire engines arrived and fought the blaze for nearly two hours before it was under control. The fire started where chocolate stocks were kept and destroyed the front glass panels, ACP sheets and the shop’s electrical wiring. The shop is owned by V.C. Ahmed, a native of Koothuparamba. Flames reached the adjoining shop but firefighters prevented extensive damage. District Fire Officer B. Raj, Assistant Station Officer Joy, Senior Fire and Rescue Officer M. Sooraj and other fire personnel coordinated the rescue and extinguishing efforts. A short‑circuit is suspected to have triggered the fire. The incident occurred in a densely packed market area where shops stand close together, raising the risk of rapid spread.
Context
Short‑circuit faults are a common cause of fires in small retail units, especially where electrical loads are high. Quick response by fire services in crowded markets can limit loss and protect nearby businesses.
