The Netherlands will skip the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest due to growing concerns over Israel's participation in the annual music festival. Public broadcaster NPO announced the decision on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, pointing to deep divisions in society regarding the military campaign in Gaza.
Broadcaster Flip-Flop
The Dutch choice follows a series of policy shifts within the country's media organizations. In August, the AVROTROS broadcaster dropped out of the contest because it felt the event was no longer neutral. NPO stepped in a month later to take over the responsibility before reversing its stance and pulling out entirely.
Boycotts and Withdrawals
The Netherlands joins a growing list of nations stepping away from the event over the same issue. Ireland has also stated it will not take part, while the head of Spain's public broadcaster supports a boycott. Bulgaria will host next year's contest on May 15 in Burgas after singer Dara won the previous event in Vienna.
Context
Cultural and music events often become platforms for wider political tensions when global conflicts divide public opinion. Broadcasters frequently face difficult choices between artistic participation and domestic social pressures during times of international crisis.
