Political rivals unite while ruling allies clash in Maharashtra bank polls

Political rivals across Maharashtra are making local deals to bypass cooperative bank elections, even as parties within the ruling Mahayuti alliance prepare to compete against each other. District central cooperative banks in Sangli, Satara, Ahilyanagar, and Latur are holding elections, with numerous seats already secured without a contest as leaders prioritize consensus for senior figures and their family members.
Unopposed Deals
In Sangli, 15 out of 21 seats have been filled without voting. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis spoke by phone with NCP (SP) MLA Jayant Patil to arrange a contest-free outcome, citing ongoing drought conditions in the state. Ahilyanagar saw nine of 21 seats go unopposed after Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat organized an all-party meeting, bridging an old rivalry with BJP minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil. Several relatives of prominent politicians secured uncontested positions in this district, though NCP (SP) MP Nilesh Lanke chose to stay away and announced a run. Satara also recorded nine unopposed seats following the withdrawal of several senior figures, yet alliance friction surfaced as BJP minister Jaykumar Gore prepares to face his brother Shekhar Gore, who represents the Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
Local Fractures
Latur is seeing contested battles for 18 of 19 seats, with Congress leader Dhiraj Deshmukh taking the only uncontested spot. In that district, NCP minister Babasaheb Patil allied with the Congress led by Dilip Deshmukh, moving away from the state-level Mahayuti alignment. These cooperative banks hold major political weight because they issue crop loans to farmers and connect directly to the rural economy and voter influence.
Context
Recent legal amendments barring individuals from serving over ten consecutive years as bank directors have forced many veteran politicians to step down, clearing the path for their successors. These local compromises also trail the Mahayuti alliance's defeat in the Gokul cooperative dairy election in Kolhapur, where the Congress party emerged victorious despite opposition efforts.
