GeneralThirteen of Seventeen Escaped Inmates Rearrested Following Jailbreak in Theni District

Seventeen remand prisoners broke out of the Thekkampatti sub-jail near Andipatti in Theni district after attacking prison warders at around 11 p.m. on Monday, October 26, 2026. As of 5 p.m., special teams apprehended 13 of the escaped inmates.

The Incident

All 17 inmates were locked together in a cell in the second block. At about 10.30 p.m., a few inmates called the duty warder and claimed an inmate was suffering from an epileptic seizure to get help. The staffer opened the door and entered, allowing the others to assault him and flee under the cover of darkness using the prisoners' pathway and attacking personnel at the main gate.

Search Operations

The injured Grade II constable, Thangapandi, was admitted to Theni Government Medical College and Hospital alongside two other injured personnel. Police formed 17 special teams, deployed check-post personnel, and launched combing operations using high-definition drones in forest areas along the Western Ghats and in neighbouring Idukki district, alerting the Keralam police as well. Director General of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal stated that a thorough inquiry will follow once all prisoners are secured, while the public can share information by calling 9498101570 or 9176104100.

Context

Jailbreaks typically trigger immediate security reviews and heightened vigilance across state correctional facilities, especially regarding standard operating procedures for night-time cell openings. Sub-jail facilities primarily hold remand prisoners awaiting trial rather than convicted criminals serving long-term sentences.
