A limited ceasefire has started in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky to allow aid deliveries and civilian evacuations. Ukrainian officials and Russia's defence ministry confirmed that the truce is being respected.
The Crisis
Oleshky sits on the front line in the Kherson region, trapped between the Dnipro River and Russian forces. Residents have lived without electricity, gas, water, or open shops for three years. Many have resorted to cooking garden weeds to survive extreme hunger. Up to 6,000 people remain in the area, with 1,700 still living inside the city itself, compared to a pre-war population of 24,000.
Evacuation Plans
The White House stated that US First Lady Melania Trump secured the ceasefire. Russia's defence ministry said units from the Dnepr army group cleared main access roads of mines and booby traps. Ukraine's human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets travelled to the area to co-ordinate the operation alongside Russia's commissioner for human rights Yana Lantratova. The truce is scheduled to run until 23:59 local time on 1 November, according to Ukrainian MP Davyd Arakhamia.
Context
Oleshky was seized by Russian forces during the early days of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Relief efforts in active conflict zones often require delicate negotiations between multiple nations and international mediators to establish temporary humanitarian corridors.
ExplainerWhy this matters
What Happened
A temporary ceasefire was established in the frontline Ukrainian city of Oleshky to allow trapped civilians to evacuate and humanitarian aid to enter.
Why It Matters
The city has been cut off from basic utilities like water, power, and food for three years under Russian occupation, with residents facing severe shortages and dangerous escape routes. The involvement of international figures like US First Lady Melania Trump highlights the high-level diplomatic efforts required to open corridors in active conflict zones.
What Happens Next
It remains to be seen whether the evacuations will proceed safely, how many residents will successfully reach Ukrainian-controlled territory rather than Russia, and whether the temporary truce will hold for the duration of the planned operation.
