Karnataka will set up its first tribal university on a 120‑acre campus in Challakere taluk of Chitradurga district, the state announced on Friday. The project was revealed by T. Raghumurthy, Minister for Scheduled Tribes Welfare and in‑charge of the Chitradurga district. He said the proposal has already been submitted and that the final go‑ahead will follow detailed talks with the Chief Minister. The university will offer courses on tribal art, language, literature, culture and traditional knowledge. It will also promote research into tribal lifestyles, social and economic development and other community systems. Skill‑based and professional programmes are planned to boost employability for tribal youth. The campus will be spread over 120 acres in Challakere, providing space for academic blocks, hostels and research centres. The move aims to expand higher‑education opportunities for Karnataka’s tribal population and preserve their cultural heritage.

Context

Tribal universities are rare in India, with only a few dedicated institutions existing to protect indigenous knowledge. Establishing one in Karnataka reflects the state’s push to improve education and job prospects for tribal communities while safeguarding their cultural identity.
