Australia fought back on day one of the third Test in Cape Town to bowl out South Africa for 329, sparing captain Pat Cummins from a potentially disastrous decision at the toss.
What Happened
South Africa reached 203-1 and later 327-6, driven by Marques Ackerman with 95 runs and Aiden Markram with 78 runs. Mitchell Starc claimed six wickets for 72 runs, taking four wickets in six deliveries late in the day to dismiss the hosts. Nathan Lyon also contributed by removing Ackerman and captain Temba Bavuma for single-figure scores.
Context
Australia entered this series decider after losing the second Test in Gqeberha by an innings and 31 runs. The team faces ongoing selection pressures, including an injured Steve Smith and the departure of opener Nic Maddinson. A series loss here could carry implications heading into next year's Ashes.
