September's full Moon shone brightly across the UK sky on Saturday night as clear weather gave many people a great view. The Moon is called the Harvest Moon because it appears at the time of year when people traditionally gather crops. It reached its absolute fullest point at 17:49 BST on Saturday, but it made its biggest visual impact later in the evening when the sky grew completely dark.

Photo Highlights

People shared pictures from many different places. A view from Buckinghamshire showed the Moon from both a plane and the ground. A photo from Northern Ireland made the Moon look like it was rolling down giant steps. In Whitby, north Yorkshire, the Moon rose perfectly framed among old ruins. Essex brought a more dreamy view as the Moon broke through clouds, while Penarth in the Vale of Glamorgan showed a small white and yellow glow lighting up blue sky hues. A photo from Burton Joyce in Nottinghamshire made the September night look like Halloween, and North Shields featured an orange Moon glow against a pink and blue sky.

Regional Sights

The Shetlands offered a dark and mystical scene. In London, the Harvest Moon shone a bright white over Wapping and the River Thames. Norwich featured a golden Moon glow that looked like the finishing touch to local lights.
