Box Office Lead

"Avengers: Endgame" took the top spot at the North American box office over the weekend following a special theatrical re-release by The Walt Disney Co. The 2019 blockbuster earned $26 million domestically and another $60 million overseas, pushing its massive lifetime total past $2.8 billion. Studio tracking firm Exhibitor Relations noted that the encore presentation, billed as "Endgame: Encore," was designed to build early support and excitement ahead of the planned December 18 debut of "Avengers: Doomsday." Fans turned out in large numbers to watch four new post-credit scenes, alongside an introductory thank-you message to fans from Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans.

New Releases

Several new films also debuted during the crowded weekend. Sony's "Resident Evil" reboot secured second place with $23.3 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to $103.5 million. Paramount Pictures launched "Heart of the Beast," directed by David Ayer and starring Brad Pitt as a retired veteran surviving in the Alaskan wilderness with his combat dog. The film brought in $20 million from 3,435 theaters domestically alongside $30.1 million internationally, though its $82 million production budget makes profitability challenging. Meanwhile, A24's "Primetime" debuted with $19.2 million on a modest $15 million budget. Directed by 30-year-old documentarian Lance Oppenheim, the film stars Robert Pattinson as reality TV host Chris Hansen and is based on the mid-2000s show "To Catch a Predator." Buoyed by buzz out of the Venice Film Festival and strong reviews, 69 percent of its ticket buyers were under the age of 30. Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation also debuted the family animated film "Forgotten Island," which brought in $12.8 million domestically against an $80 million production budget.

Context

Hollywood studios frequently turn to theatrical re-releases to fill gaps in release schedules and generate renewed interest in major franchises. Industry watchers point out that encore screenings with exclusive new footage offer an effective marketing tool to drive word-of-mouth chatter before upcoming sequels.
