Pop star George Michael is being remembered at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards with a special tribute performance. The event comes forty years after his solo debut album Faith and nearly a decade after his death. Singers Raye, Sombr and Teddy Swims are teaming up for the performance, which is directed by Adam Blackstone.

Cause of Death

George Michael died at age 53 on Christmas Day in 2016 at his home in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. Darren Salter, the senior coroner for Oxfordshire, stated that the singer died of natural causes, specifically heart failure and liver disease. Medical terms given included dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver, meaning his heart was enlarged, weakened, and inflamed, and his liver had an unhealthy buildup of fat. Because the cause was natural, no inquest was needed. His former partner, Kenny Goss, had said at the time that his body simply gave up after years of weakness.
