Indians are increasingly searching Google, YouTube and patient forums for symptom information before booking a doctor's visit, says Smriti Tandon, co‑founder of Online Chikitsa Mitra and 120by80 under Salubrious Technologies. Patients want to know if a symptom is serious, whether others have had similar issues, which doctor to see and what treatment might cost. Tandon notes that many also look for personal stories about pain, side‑effects or recovery, because such accounts give relatability and reassurance that pure medical facts lack. Fear also drives the behaviour; a clinic appointment can make an unknown symptom feel real, and worries about costly tests or unexpected bills add to anxiety. News stories about high hospital charges or unnecessary procedures amplify this fear, even if they are not typical. Searching online privately lets users prepare, feel in control and save time, especially when outpatient departments are crowded and waiting times are long. The digital search offers 24‑hour access, privacy and the ability to read at one’s own pace. Tandon says the pattern reveals a desire for informed, confident healthcare decisions rather than blind trust. She adds that digital health platforms must combine convenience with professional clinical judgement to avoid misinformation.

Context

Online health queries reflect broader digital adoption in India, where internet penetration and smartphone use have surged, making medical information easily reachable but also highlighting the need for reliable guidance.
