The Indianapolis Colts have traded All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks for a third-round draft pick and a fifth-round pick. A source with knowledge of the agreement shared the details anonymously on Tuesday before either team made an official announcement. Nelson is thirty years old and has been selected to the Pro Bowl eight times. He can become a free agent in March. He had kept his future plans private while focusing on finishing the current season. This trade marks the second major change for the Colts within two weeks during a difficult period. The team holds a two-and-five record after losing three straight games and twelve of their past fourteen matches overall. Indianapolis fired general manager Chris Ballard last week following a home loss to the winless Tennessee Titans. Assistant general manager Ed Dodds has taken over those duties for now. Nelson entered the NFL as the sixth overall draft pick in 2018. He earned All-Pro honors from 2018 through 2020 alongside teammate Darius Leonard, making them the first rookie teammates to reach that status since Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus did so with the Chicago Bears in 1965.
Context
Major trades involving star players often happen when a struggling sports team decides to change direction and look toward future draft picks instead of keeping veteran talent. In professional football, general manager changes during a losing streak frequently signal that an organisation is starting a larger roster rebuild.
