NZC to test single‑ball policy in first half of 2026‑27 Ford Trophy

New Zealand Cricket will use a single ball for the entire 50‑over innings in the opening five rounds of the 2026‑27 men's Ford Trophy, beginning on Oct 28. Under the existing rules two fresh balls are introduced at the start and remain in play until the end of over 34; the fielding side then picks one of them for both ends from overs 35 to 50. The change aims to give bowlers more chance to generate reverse swing in the final overs, so the board will run the one‑ball experiment for the first half of the season, which runs until November before a second block and finals in February. NZC will assess the trial after those five rounds and decide whether to keep the format or return to the two‑ball system. "I think it adds a really interesting dynamic to the game and to the format, so I quite like the idea of trialling the single ball and bringing back the art of getting the ball to reverse swing," Central Stags bowler Will Young said. He added, "With the ball doing a bit more at the back end of the innings, it will challenge the batters to figure out different ways to generate a strike rate. It'll be interesting to see if it leads to a different style of playing or, for instance, a different approach to the power play." Young recalled older internationals, noting, "It reminds me of when you stumble across old international highlights, and watch the death bowling and you can see that the ball's a bit softer and reverse‑swinging - and it's really difficult for the batter to score at more than a run‑a‑ball in those last 10-15 overs." The single‑ball rule was last used in international cricket in 2011 before the ICC switched to two new balls per innings. Round 1 opens with Auckland Aces vs Canterbury in Auckland and Central Stags vs Northern Districts in Nelson; a Wellington Firebirds‑Otago Volts match slated for Oct 28 has been moved to Oct 29 due to flight cancellations. Players will also use the new conditions as preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup later next year.
Context
The trial reflects ongoing efforts to balance batting firepower with bowlers' skill set, a debate that often resurfaces when equipment or rule tweaks alter the game's pace.
