India clinched the Twenty20 series against New Zealand with a six-wicket victory in the third match in Wellington, taking an unassailable three-nil lead with two games remaining. Indian captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bowl first, sending New Zealand in to bat.
Record Innings
Openers Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Suryavanshi set multiple world records during the run chase of 199. India reached 50 runs in 2.2 overs, becoming the first Test-playing nation to cross the fifty-run mark so quickly in T20 history. The team total reached 100 runs in five overs, setting a record for the highest score by any side in the first five overs of a T20 match. India then scored 118 runs in the powerplay, another world record. The opening pair put on 133 runs together before Suryavanshi was caught by Daryl Mitchell off Matthew Fisher in the eighth over, scoring 45 runs from 19 balls with four sixes and four fours. Abhishek Sharma scored a blistering 113 runs from just 38 balls, hitting 11 sixes and nine fours. He reached his century in 35 balls and surpassed Virat Kohli's record to become the Indian player with the most T20 centuries, now totaling 11 across international, IPL, and domestic cricket. Abhishek also became the first player from a Test-playing nation to hit ten or more sixes in a T20 innings on three separate occasions. Shreyas Iyer fell for five runs to Mitchell Santner, and Sanju Samson contributed 18 runs before being bowled by Kyle Jamieson. Naman Dhir hit the winning boundary off Jamieson in the 14th over as India reached 199 for four in 13.2 overs.
New Zealand Innings
Batting first, New Zealand posted 198 for three in their 20 overs. Opener Tim Seifert fell early when the team score was four, but Finn Allen and Daryl Mitchell added 86 runs for the second wicket. Allen scored 40 runs from 25 balls before being caught by Naman Dhir off Nitish Kumar Reddy. Glenn Phillips added 17 runs before being caught and bowled by Axar Patel. Daryl Mitchell anchored the innings with an unbeaten 89 runs from 52 balls, featuring five sixes and five fours, marking his highest score in T20 cricket. Middle-order batter Bevon Jacobs provided strong support with an unbeaten 39 runs from 23 balls, helping New Zealand cross the 100-run mark in the 10th over and reach a competitive total.
Context
Record-breaking opening partnerships in the powerplay often put immense pressure on bowling attacks by forcing defensive fields early in the innings. Such high-scoring chases highlight how modern T20 batting strategies emphasize aggressive stroke-making from the very first over to neutralize target pressure.
