Director Rajiv Rai says his decision to replace Sanjay Dutt in his 1985 directorial debut Yudh ended their deep personal friendship. Speaking in an interview with Vickey Lalwani, Rai explained that he had to drop Dutt because the actor was dealing with personal difficulties at the time.
Family Ties And Casting
The two families shared a deep connection before the movie was made. Rai's father, Gulshan Rai, financed Sanjay Dutt's debut film, Rocky, which was directed by Sanjay's father, Sunil Dutt. The older generation maintained a close friendship, but Rajiv's professional decision strained his bond with the actor. Sanjay Dutt was originally cast to play Jackie Shroff's role in Yudh. Because the change happened late, the entire film had to be reshot with only 20 to 30 percent left to complete, and Anil Kapoor was also recast.
Current Equation
Rai admitted that while they are still friends on the surface today, the close bond is gone. He noted that he has only visited Dutt's home once or twice since the incident and still feels regret about the choice, sometimes thinking he should not have done it. Yudh eventually released in 1985 as an action thriller starring Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor in a double role, Tina Munim, Nutan, Danny Denzongpa, and Hema Malini, following a plot involving crime and family secrets.
Context
Behind-the-scenes casting changes and creative disputes are a common part of film production history, often impacting personal relationships in the tight-knit Hindi film industry. Directors balancing studio pressures with personal bonds sometimes face difficult choices that alter long-standing connections between film families.
