Ice Face Rub Does Not Permanently Shrink Pores, Dermatologist Says

Applying ice directly to the face does not permanently reduce pore size, a dermatologist in Bengaluru says. Dr Swetha Sridhar, medical director of Dr Swetha's Skin Sutra Clinic, explained that cold exposure only narrows superficial blood vessels for a short time, giving a temporary tightening and reduced puffiness. The skin may look smoother while the ice is on, but once it returns to normal temperature the pores look the same as before. Pore dimensions are set mainly by genetics, skin type, amount of oil, age‑related loss of collagen and elasticity, and sun‑induced damage; oily skin and aging tend to make pores more visible. Ice cannot shrink the actual openings of hair follicles and sebaceous glands, which do not open and close like doors. Prolonged rubbing of ice can damage the skin barrier, cause irritation, and in extreme cases lead to cold injury, especially for people with rosacea, highly sensitive skin, or other cold‑reactive conditions. For those who want clearer pores, experts recommend a regular routine that includes gentle cleansing, occasional use of salicylic acid to clear debris, retinoids to boost collagen over time, non‑comedogenic moisturisers and daily broad‑spectrum sunscreen to protect against further sun damage. If ice is used only for a quick depuff, it should be wrapped in a soft cloth, applied briefly and without pressure. The effect remains cosmetic and short‑lived, not a proven treatment for pore reduction.
Context
Social media often amplifies quick‑fix skin hacks, but lasting skin health relies on proven ingredients and protection from sun damage rather than temporary temperature tricks.
