What Happened

Water from Kodar reservoir's main canal failed to reach its farthest point, causing rice fields in Gadhsivani, Achhola and Achholi (Sirpur) to dry. Early monsoon rains failed to arrive, pushing sowing to later dates, but the delayed planting could not compensate for the current water deficit. In Pathargama block, Pipra Panchayat's Harla Tola, delayed monsoon rain also left fields dry at the grain-filling stage. According to the reports, the water shortage is affecting roughly three villages in Sirpur and several fields in Harla Tola.

Reaction

Farmer Bhandu Ram Sahu of Gadhsivani reported his standing crop withered because he has no private irrigation equipment. Farmers in Harla Tola said they had to run pumps and motors to water fields, raising cultivation costs. Both groups warned that without rain in the next few days the harvest could suffer heavy losses.

Context

Canal-based irrigation depends on water reaching the end of the channel; any break leaves rain-fed areas vulnerable during a weak monsoon. Using diesel-run pumps adds expense, which can push smallholders into debt when yields fall.
