Threat Ahead

Another new weather system is likely to form in the Bay of Bengal after the impact of Cyclone Arnab, bringing a fresh threat to Odisha. Weather models and experts state that a low-pressure area could develop and move toward the coast of Odisha by early November. On October 27, multiple systems were active in the Bay of Bengal, including Arnab and a low-pressure area in the southwest of the bay. Advanced weather models like ECMWF and IMD GFS indicate this new system may grow stronger and turn into a storm around November 1 to 2.

Impact and Precautions

If this new storm takes shape, coastal districts of Odisha that were already affected by Arnab will face renewed risks of heavy rain and stormy winds. Meanwhile, Cyclone Arnab has grown into a very severe cyclonic storm, leading to the closure of schools and colleges. The Cyclone Warning Centre in Visakhapatnam reports that the low-pressure system in the bay has converted into a cyclone. As of 7 am on October 27, the storm was located 300 kilometers southwest of Visakhapatnam, 380 kilometers from Kakinada, and 460 kilometers from Machilipatnam. Weather experts and the India Meteorological Department note that this second storm is currently only a prediction based on mathematical models, and no firm claim can be made yet due to Arnab's uncertain path.

Context

Coastal regions in eastern and southern India face frequent tropical storms during the post-monsoon season as systems develop over the warm waters of the Bay of Bengal. Meteorological agencies track these developments closely using radar systems to provide advance warnings and protect coastal populations. Citizens in the path of these systems are advised to rely only on official weather updates rather than rumors.
