The Australian sharemarket made a bright start to the session following a positive lead from Wall Street after the US Federal Reserve kept interest rates on hold. The S&P/ASX 200 rose 38.8 points, or 0.4 per cent, to reach 8886.1 in early trade.

Market Sectors

Energy stocks climbed as oil prices dipped in early Asian trade. Woodside Energy gained 1.1 per cent, Santos rose 1 per cent and Ampol added 0.8 per cent. Financial stocks also advanced, with National Australia Bank and Westpac up 1.3 per cent, Commonwealth Bank adding 0.7 per cent, and ANZ Bank rising 0.6 per cent. Wesfarmers dropped 2.9 per cent after reporting slowing sales at Bunnings, while JB HiFi rose 0.8 per cent as Australian sales slipped but New Zealand sales grew. Mining stocks showed mixed results, and gold miners increased as gold hovered around $US4050 an ounce.

US Federal Reserve Decision

The Federal Reserve voted 10-2 to keep its benchmark interest rate in the 3.75 per cent to 4.00 per cent range. Fed chair Kevin Warsh stated that the central bank has started to see tighter financial and credit conditions for some businesses and households. Fed Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack dissented, wanting a quarter-percentage-point rate hike instead.

Context

Central banks like the US Federal Reserve adjust benchmark interest rates to manage inflation and stabilize the broader economy. Changes in these rates directly influence global borrowing costs, currency values, and investor sentiment across major international stock exchanges.
