Consumer-focused artificial intelligence agents are gaining popularity as major technology companies compete in a surging market for proactive digital assistants. Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic are among the labs offering tools designed to work proactively on a user's behalf for tasks ranging from grocery shopping to managing to-do lists.
Using Multiple Agents
Many tech professionals use a stack of multiple agents from different labs rather than relying on a single tool. Business consultant Jose Artigas notes that no single agent currently performs every function perfectly. Clara Gigling, founder of Oudae Labs, uses a system of checks and balances where one agent completes work and another critiques it to find mistakes. Different consumer-facing agents target distinct functions, vary in accessibility and pricing, and face restrictions outside the United States.
Task Matching and Specific Tools
Major companies market their tools for specific areas. Anthropic built Claude Duet for professionals and small business owners, while Meta designed Muse for health, savings, and smart shopping. Claude Duet, OpenAI's Dots, and xAI's Grok Bot act like colleagues or chiefs of staff. Muse and Spear Street Technology's Instinct function more like personal assistants. Artigas recommends Claude Duet for new business ventures, Dots for technical debugging, Instinct for emails and travel bookings, and Muse for beginners due to its user-friendly interface. Experts advise testing agents on routine online tasks like writing long emails or booking flights, while being specific with goals and context.
Context
AI agents represent a shift from passive chatbots to active software that can execute multi-step workflows across digital tools on a user's behalf. As these tools take on more autonomous actions inside personal inboxes and calendars, managing data privacy remains a primary consideration for users testing them out.
